It's as official as it will ever be. Poodle (aka Rudiger, Whiskers, Chepe, or Chico) will officially be named Santiago José Ruiz Brelsford. The "José" will be his middle name rather than a compound name. In other words, his name in everyday usage will be Santiago.
We like Santiago because it's similarly pronounced in both languages and has nicknames we like: Santi and Tiago.
The "José" is for my dad, who goes by Jody but whose real name is Joseph. For ages, my mom has called him "José".
The equivalent of Joseph in Spanish is "José" and in Spanish the nickname for men named Josė is "Chepe". When my mom learned this, she started calling my dad "Chepe".
The nickname quickly morphed (within the span of a week in Costa Rica) to the special moniker "Chepe Dickwad" after Dad had a case of backseat driver road rage and called someone a "dickwad" for pulling a stunt that Dad has pulled in the past. Mom, without missing a beat, pointed out that Dad was one to talk, calling him Chepe Dickwad. The name stuck.
Dad has been calling his future grandson "Chepe" since he found out his sex.
We thought it would be nice to honor both grandfathers: Ernesto's dad gets the last name (Ruiz) and my dad gets the middle name (José for Joseph).
And now Dodi (aka, Chepe Dickwad) will have a little Chepe protege.
Dad, you might have the middle name, but try not to make him a dickwad.
