This land is young. Brand new. How young? At around 2 million years young. Thomas Jefferson once responded to a claim made by the famed naturalist and geologist, George Cuvier, that suggested that nature in the Americas was weak, lesser, etc, by sending 20 soldiers to Maine to find a huge moose. They found it, and shipped it to Europe, to show Cuvier what weak nature looked like. Cuvier, to his credit, recanted on his claim, admitting that there was no fact or theory behind what he claimed. Cuvier also advocated for the role that catastrophes played in shaping the Earth's geologic and biotic diversity. Catastrofism. In doing so, he sought to reconcile biblical interpretations of the Earth's formation and the origins of life with the more frequent discoveries of fossils of extinct species.
